"Teaching in the Light of Jesus"
History of BYES

1885 - 1954
Berhane Yesus Elementary School was founded by the well-known Presbyterian missionary, Dr. Thomas A. Lambie, who came to the Dembi Dollo area in 1919 by invitation to help with the influenza epidemic that hit the region in 1918-1919.
Because of his good work, Dr. Lambie and his associates were asked to stay. Dr. Lambie agreed, provided that he be given a tract of land where he could establish a mission station for the work of evangelism. He was granted a piece of land where the present Western Wollega Bethel Synod is located today. Dr. Lambie soon began a chapel, a clinic, and the first school ever in that area, Danka Elementary School, which later became Berhane Yesus Elemetary School.

Ethiopia Educates calls Berhane Yesus, “one of the oldest and most prestigious mission schools in Ethiopia.”
Berhane Yesus' current building was constructed in 2001 in partnership with A Glimmer of Hope, a Texas (USA)-based donor organization that is dedicated to "providing those living in rural villages with access to clean water, education, medical care and micro-finance loans."
Since its beginning, Berhane Yesus provided training for the required manpower for the work of evangelism, the medical work, and for the work of the numerous church schools that spread throughout the land.
